Best VPN's by Category

LiquidVPN is a VPN provider based out of Michigan, USA. They are on the small side, but their aspirations are big as they have several interesting features as part of their package.

Their VPN client is top notch (and customizable), they offer multiple security features including ‘Modulating IPs’ (where you’re IP changes constantly to avoid tracking). Their prices are slightly below average as well (a nice plus) and their customer support is fantastic! Unfortunately, they fall short in multiple areas including reliability, slow connection, and limited server locations. Their terms and policies are decent, but not great.

We won’t completely recommend Liquid VPN just yet, but they’re definitely not bad and could be the right fit for you. Click the button below to visit them, or see our list of the five best VPN providers here!

Features

Liquid VPN has an impressive feature set. They may be a small VPN, but that hasn’t held them back from building on what they offer their clients:

  • Support for OpenVPN, L2TP/IPSEC, and SSTP VPN tunnels
  • AES-256-CBC with SHA2 encryption
  • LiquidDNS: Their own zero-log DNS servers
  • NAT firewall
  • Modulating IP VPN Topology
  • Dynamic IP VPN Topology
  • Transparent DMCA complaint handling
  • Liquid Lock kill switch

This is a great list of features, and certainly puts them in contention for a spot on our list of the best VPNs for torrenting. A kill switch is so important for all P2P activity, and they have a custom on that’s sure to work.

Countries & servers

LiquidVPN has 40+ servers in 9 different countries. This is a low number on both counts. The countries they serve are:

  1. USA
  2. Canada
  3. UK
  4. Romania
  5. Switzerland
  6. Netherlands
  7. Germany
  8. Singapore
  9. Sweden

This means that those who are not in North America or Europe are going to have slow ping rates, and will likely experience some lag. If you’re an expat looking to unlock geo-blocked content in your home country, and it isn’t on the list, this isn’t the VPN for you. If you’re a world traveller looking to connect to any local server, this isn’t the VPN for you either, you’d be better off looking at IPVanish VPN, with server in over 60 countries.

They do, however, offer fast VPN servers right in the country of many VPN users. If you’re in North America or Europe, you’ll have access to a fast server near you.

Speed & reliability

LiquidVPN has speed problems, and this has been reported by other users. Here is an average speed rating on the connection used for testing, a 2Mbps restricted line, with no VPN:

Here’s that same connection being tested again just a few minutes later:

Our Speeds Without a VPN

The high Ping rates are due to the tester being far from the VPN server. Given their very limited number of servers, this was the closest one available. The inconsistency in speed tended to be towards the slower side.

Numerous tests were done to check and make sure that the best situations were being used, but the results with a shared IP were consistently slow. It is below the performance of other VPN providers reviewed, with many only taking 10% off speed. With the modulating IP servers, it was anyone’s guess as to how it would perform.

Those with much faster connections, say in the 20Gbps range, found that the Modulating IP servers would severely limit speed. Some claiming a speed drop by as much as 70%. If you need privacy there are few options better than the Modulating IP tool, but it is not built for speed.

The connection that we had with Liquid VPN proved to be quite reliable. There were no dropped connections during our days of testing.

Pricing & payments

LiquidVPN has three service plans available. All three are exactly the same, except for two differences. The standard features for each plan includes:

  • Unlimited monthly data
  • PPTP, L2TP/IPSEC, SSL/Open VPN connection
  • Access to all of their IP modulation features.

The similarities to the plans end there. Here are the three plans, and what is different about them:

  • SideKick: $6USD/Month – 1 Liquid VPN license for Mac and Windows. 2 open sessions at once.
  • Road Warrior: $10USD/Month – 1 Liquid VPN license for Mac and Windows. 4 open sessions at once.
  • Ultimate Plan: $18USD/Month – 2 Liquid VPN licenses for Mac and Windows. 8 open sessions at once.

These prices are slightly above the average for comparable plans. To look at it practically, your average user is going to sign up for the SideKick, use only one connection at once, and never use the second simultaneous connection.

It seems like a waste to not have an option for those who only want a single connection. We recommend seeing our list of the Best Cheap VPN plans for better options and prices.

Customer Support

With a small team, LiquidVPN is able to offer customer support on a very intimate level. The owner himself is often involved in online customer support issues, making sure that everything is handled properly. Other support options include:

  • Manuals: A strategy employed by LiquidVPN is to have extensive manuals and ‘how-to’ videos for their VPN client. Users can read about all the intricacies of their VPN before they even install it in the Client Area once they have signed up.
  • Tickets: If you have issues you are able to open a Support Ticket right in the Client Area. This maintains an even communication flow – no emails from multiple sources. Everything is right in one area.
  • History: If you’re curious about past communications with them, they have a history of all emails sent between your email and their domain in the Client Area. It makes for a customer support experience that feels very neat and integrated, and can be a real help if you have the same problem twice.

For those who do not yet have an account with them, the only way that we can see to get in touch with them is via their sign up, or by contacting them over Twitter. There is no live chat support around to help you out at a moment’s notice. With a small team, there can also be some delays in how quickly they contact you back.

Policies and logging

LiquidVPN’s policy in logging is that they keep no IP addresses, browsing history, or traffic data. They will only keep connection logs that deal with bandwidth usage, mostly for refund policy purposes:

  • Sign up data: Their signup process also supports privacy by only asking for a name and email address. Everything is all good on this front.
  • Abuse reports: If they do receive abuse reports about an account on their servers, LiquidVPN will block ports or nodes that belong to those who are guilty. P2P torrenting is allowed on all of their servers. LiquidVPN will also enable logging of timestamps, as well as local and remote IPs, when abuses are reported to them.
  • DMCA complaints: Are also publicly posted when received, along with the reply they send back.

Their privacy policy is an odd combination of privacy, and publicly available information that sent a mixed message to us. The important point here is that they keep no logs of browsing history or traffic data, which is good to read.

Expert Recommendation

LiquidVPN have a number of key benefits that any VPN user will enjoy:

  • Modulating IPs for increased privacy online
  • Good price points for individuals and larger companies
  • A great client which you can customize to your needs

Their limited server numbers in a very few countries, and speed consistency issues, really holds them back. Their “Code of Ethics” policy is also a confusing document which seems to cause them more harm than good. This type of information may, perhaps, be better inside of a regular Terms of Service document.

If you’re looking for a VPN provider with some innovative products and fresh ideas, LiquidVPN fits that bill. If you’re looking for a wide range of servers to use across the world, you will not be satisfied with them.
